Who We Are

David Hudson

David is Lead Consultant with DVEV Services offering strategic and technical support across a broad range of automotive topics through engagements ranging from a few hours to regular support projects on a flexible basis. He is baased in the UK Midlands but has a very international career path and is familiar with industries across several continents.

With more than 45 years experience in the automotive field, he started out with a 15 year career at Jaguar Cars in a range of Vehicle and Powertrain Engineering roles. During this formative time, David progressed though graduate training placements ending up in the Vehicle Research group under the mentorship of Jim Randle. This small team provided a fertile environment for seeing a wide cross-section of the total vehicle engineering process and sparked a curiosity for "other people's problems" that has never left.

David then created his own automotive consultancy under the title of Road Vehicle Refinement to allow him to bring skills in the noise and vibration engineering domain into broader applications. Early contracts included a major project to develop an all-new C-segment sedan for an Asian client moving away from licence manufacture, supporting another Asian company in setting up a UK technical centre, and assisting in the development of the Aston Martin DB7 with Jaguarsport.

Off the back of this experience, he was then recruited by Lotus Engineering to head the Vehicle Development group based in Hethel that was working on multiple contract projects for Eurupean, North American, and Asian clients. He had teams in NVH, vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics and vehicle safety under his direction with a total of 50 engineers and technicians.

In 1995, David made a move to the USA and joined the emerging local team that was being created by Ricardo. Although the focus was on powertrain projects, he was also instrumental in creating a collaborative working arrangement with the vehcile engineering skills already presnt at FFD Inc. whose parent company had just been acquired by Ricardo.

For a decade, he worked with India’s Tata Motors including a 3-year stint managing the NVH team in Pune and later moving to the European Technical Centre in Coventry developing their electrification and low-carbon technology delivery plan. Following this, he joined an early-stage technology company focused on high-efficiency electric motors and power electronics, one of the key building blocks of future-fit electric traction systems.

He is passionate about the transition to Net Zero transport and strongly believes in maximizing the efficient use of energy. David is also an enthusiastic supporter of motoring heritage activities, owning classic cars and attending historic motorsports events as well as reading many books on these topics.
